Blackjack Terms

There are some terms used in the game of blackjack that a player ought to know if he decides to play it at casinos. These are pretty much easy to understand and players could learn more of them once they begin to play it frequently. Blackjack or 21 is one of the easiest and most exciting card games to play and could be a great way to spend free time or gain earnings. A player competes against a dealer by having a higher hand that must not exceed 21. This is done by being dealt with two cards. Blackjack has some words and actions which are not common for other games, so ever if you have been playing at casino for a long period of time, you should learn them to avoid mistakes during your game play.

Hit - Take a Card

Hit means asking for another card aside from the two cards originally dealt. It is an option for the player if he has very low cards that can be safe enough to be added into another single card. He can compute the hand since cards are not higher than 11. In blackjack, Ace may be equal to 11 while the face cards are equal to 10. Other cards are equal to their numerical value.

Double Down - Make the Bet Higher

Double down is another basic blackjack term that mainly speaks of doubling the bet once a player sees his hand to be good enough to raise the original bet. Doubling down means being dealt with a third card, in which the player is left with no other choice but to stand by it. Expert players know when the right time to double down is. If their cards sum up to 11, it has greater chances of reaching 21, and a good time to raise the best since it would be safe to get any other cards.

Surrender - Protect Your Bet

Surrender in blackjack means to turn cards without playing. This is only allowed when no action is done yet on the hand. But once double down or hit is asked, surrender is no longer allowed. This action takes a player to lose only half his bet.

Insurance - Half-Wager Bet

Insurance is an option for players when the dealer has an Ace in his up card. This is like taking a side bet on the hand. Players who decide to take insurance can bet up to half of their original wager. The player can bet whether the down card is ten or not or a blackjack or not. If he does not have a 10, the player loses his bet and proceeds playing and if the dealer does have a 10, the player wins the side bet and proceeds playing his hand.

Split - Divide Your Hand

Split means splitting off two same valued cards to produce two independent hands. For instance, if a player is dealt two 8’s, he can split it into two. The dealer gives two more cards to be paired with the original cards, and thus, the player must have additional bet. The dealer will separate the cards. Splitting two 8’s is a good idea, but if two 10’s are received, it would not be smart to split it off because it is already equal to 20, which is a good value.
